As a parent you can often be made to feel like you’re being too precious in your overwhelming desire to protect your newborn baby from pain.


Like when your friend says “Oh just warning you — little Jimmy has a bit of a cold. Nothing major though so we can still come and visit you and bubs today.”

Or when you meet at the park for a play date with healthy toddler and newborn in tow, to find said play date has a cough and green snot running at full steam from both nostrils.

Or when your dinner date comes over and says “The kids won’t eat too much, sorry — we’ve all had gastro all week.”

No, no and no.

If you have sick children, stay home. Don’t send them to kindy. Don’t come to play. Don’t kiss and cuddle my children. Please don’t spread the germs — I don’t want to spend a week working from home while caring for vomiting youngsters and still paying for childcare. And I really do not want to spend the weekend in bed because, what do you know, I got it too.

You may think it is nothing. That some paranoid mums are silly like that, rushing off to the doctors every five minutes and wrapping their kids in cotton wool — that germs are everywhere, particularly in flu season, and you can’t keep them in a bubble forever.

But all you have to do is hear a horror story like that of UK mum Claire Henderson, whose newborn daughter Brooke was kissed on the mouth — and then spent five days in hospital after developing the herpes virus on her lips, cheeks and chin.

But she was lucky. The cold sore virus can be fatal for a baby under three months, as was shown in Queensland just last year when Mackay baby Eloise Lampton died from it, just a few short days after she was born.

“The moral of the story is DO NOT let anyone kiss your newborn’s mouth, even if they don’t look like they have a cold sore,” Claire Henderson wrote on social media.

“And if someone had a cold sore, ask them to stay away until it has gone.”

There is no excuse for it.

For six weeks, that tiny baby is unimmunised against most of the germs us mortals carry around every day. To you it may just be a runny nose or an ugly sore on your top lip. To that baby, to that baby’s family, it could mean the difference between life and death.

We need to properly respect a child’s right to good health.

I recently tried to visit some good friends who had just had a baby, to be told — could we possibly wait until after the baby’s six-week shots?

It’s not something you hear of a lot, and I’m sure an approach that strict isn’t for everyone — but you know what? Good on her for saying how she felt, instead of politely agreeing to something you didn’t feel comfortable with, and then dealing with the consequences.

We need to stop looking at this as a new generation of over-protective parents wrapping a child in cotton wool — it has to be seen as nothing more than what it is — and that is the right thing to do.

Giving a baby the best chance at life is your right — your responsibility actually — and no one should make you feel guilty for expressing caution.

If you’re an American, you probably store eggs in the refrigerator – and wouldn’t think of doing it any other way. There is a lot of controversy about storing eggs in the fridge to prevent salmonella poisoning. And many say that American eggs are particularly susceptible to these bacteria because of the way chickens are raised and eggs are cleaned/washed.
In much of Europe, for instance, eggs are often stored right on the counter, at room temperature.

European egg marketing regulations state that storing eggs in cold storage and then leaving them out at room temperature could lead to condensation, which could promote the growth of bacteria on the shell that could probably get into the egg as well.

So, despite what you may have heard, eggs that are fresh and have an intact cuticle do not need to be refrigerated, as long as you are going to consume them within a relatively short period of time.

Most grocery-store eggs in the US should not be left unrefrigerated because they’ve had their cuticles essentially washed off. If your eggs are fresh from the organic farm, with intact cuticles, and will be consumed within a few days, you can simply leave them on the counter or in a cool cupboard.

When it comes to minimizing salmonella infections, American producers focus on the eggshells, which could get sullied with organic matter, such as chicken feces. The USDA requires producers to rinse, dry, and mist the eggs with chlorine before sending them to market.

Europeans, on the other hand, focus on inhibiting salmonella infections in the hens themselves.

If an egg is infected with salmonella, the bacteria will multiply more quickly if the egg is stored at room temperature instead of in the refrigerator, particularly if they’re stored for longer than 21 days. This is why, in the US, public health agencies advise keeping your eggs in the fridge.

And the truth is, the way most eggs are raised in the US – in industrial concentrated animal feeding operations or CAFOs – the risk of salmonella contamination rises.

In CAFOs, egg-laying hens are often crammed into tiny quarters with less space to stand upon than the computer screen you are looking at. Disease is rampant, and the birds ARE filthy — not because of their nature, but because we have removed them from their natural habitat and compromised their innate resistance to disease.

When you have eggs from tens of thousands of chickens – or more — all under one roof, there’s a good chance they’re going to get feces and other contaminants on them. The US solution, rather than reducing the size of the flocks and ensuring better sanitation and access to the outdoors, is to wash the eggs. But this isn’t as innocuous as it sounds.

As the eggs are scrubbed, rinsed, dried, and spritzed with a chlorine mist, its protective cuticle may be compromised. This is a natural barrier that comes from the mother hen that lays the egg, and it acts as a shield against bacteria.

It even contains antimicrobial properties. US egg-washing strips this natural protectant from the egg, which may actually make it more likely to become contaminated.

Industrial egg washing, by the way, is banned in much of Europe, not only because of potential damage to the eggs’ cuticles but also because it might allow for more “sloppy” egg-producing practices.

Ingredients:

● 50 cloves of garlic (peeled and cleaned)
● 2 teaspoons olive oil
● 2 tablespoons of butter

● 2 large onions (minced)
● 6 cups (250ml each) chicken soup (only a base)
● 1 bunch herbs (parsley, thyme, bay leaves)
● 3 cups old bread (cubes)
● 1 cup fatty sour cream

Directions:

Preheat your oven at 180 degrees. Then, mix 1/3 of the garlic with olive oil and wrap it in some aluminum foil. Next, bake this for an hour and a half then leave it to cool. In a pot, melt the butter and the olive oil. Follow by stewing the onions for 10 minutes. Squeeze the garlic out of oil and add it to the onions. Mix all the ingredients well. Then add the thyme, chicken soup and herbs.

Continue boiling at low heat then add the bread. Simmer for 5 minutes. The bread should soften. Strain the herbs then blend everything together. You should get a creamy mixture. Put the mixture back in the pot and finish by adding the sour cream. Season it with some salt according to taste.
